What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
Last updated: July 2026 · GEONI Team
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of getting your brand, name or website cited inside the answers produced by generative AI engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. Search shifted from ten blue links to a single AI answer; GEO is how you get into that answer.
Why is GEO talked about now?
Users now ask "what's the best [category]?" directly to an AI assistant. A search engine lists dozens of links and leaves the choice to the user; a generative AI engine gives one answer and usually recommends 2–3 names. A brand not in that answer stays invisible. GEO optimizes exactly that visibility.
GEO, AEO and SEO: what's the difference?
| Term | Goal | Success metric |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Top of the search results list | Rank, organic traffic |
| GEO | Being cited inside the generative AI answer | Appearing in answers, recommendation order |
| AEO | The industry name for the same goal as GEO | Visibility in AI answers |
In short: SEO optimizes being found, GEO optimizes being recommended. Good SEO is a solid start for GEO but isn't enough — AI engines combine training data, live web access and structural signals.
How is GEO measured?
Measurement means systematically asking AI engines the questions real users ask. A healthy GEO measurement covers at least:
- Recognition: Does the engine recognize the brand correctly, and how does it describe it?
- Category visibility (Share of Voice): Is the brand recommended in "best X" questions?
- Technical access: Can AI bots reach the site; are
robots.txtandllms.txtcorrect? - Structural signals: Is brand identity clear to machines via JSON-LD schema?
- Source trust: Is the brand cited in independent sources AI trusts?
GEONI combines these into a 0–100 AI Visibility Score, with competitor analysis and the topics you're losing.
How do you improve GEO?
- Open the door to AI bots: allow them in robots.txt, add llms.txt. llms.txt guide →
- Add structured data: Organization/Person/Product/FAQ schema to clarify your identity.
- Write answer-first content: the first paragraph should answer the question directly.
- Get cited in trusted sources: be mentioned where AI engines look.
- Measure and track: visibility isn't static; monitor your score over time.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between GEO and SEO?
SEO targets the top of the results list; GEO targets being cited inside the AI answer. In SEO appearing among many results is enough; in GEO you're either in the one answer or you don't exist.
Are GEO and AEO the same thing?
Largely yes — two terms for the same goal. GEO is academic, AEO is industry.
Can GEO really be measured?
Yes. By asking engines real questions and checking whether you appear, a 0–100 score is produced. GEONI does this free in 60 seconds.
