Why Isn't My Brand in ChatGPT?

Last updated: 26 July 2026 · GEONI Team

You're a known brand in your space and you rank well on Google. But when you ask ChatGPT "who would you recommend here?", your name never comes up — your competitor does. This is increasingly common, and most brands don't even realize it. Here are the 7 most frequent reasons, each with a fix.

1. Your site is closed to AI crawlers

AI engines can only learn your content if they can crawl it. If your robots.txt blocks GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot, AI never sees your site. Many sites do this unknowingly — a blanket block catches AI bots too.

Fix: Explicitly allow AI crawlers in robots.txt and add an llms.txt at the root. See the llms.txt guide →

2. Your structured data (schema) is missing

AI resolves "who is this site, what do they sell, who is this person?" on the machine side via structured data (JSON-LD schema). Without Organization, Product or Person schema, AI can't interpret you correctly and won't confidently recommend you.

Fix: Add Organization/Person/Product/FAQ schema that states clearly who you are.

3. You aren't cited in sources AI trusts

Before recommending a brand, AI engines want to have encountered it in independent sources. Existing only on your own site isn't enough; you need a consistent presence in trusted publications, knowledge bases and directories.

Fix: Aim to be cited in independent, trusted sources; build a consistent brand entry in global knowledge bases.

4. Your content isn't "answer-first"

AI prefers text that answers a question directly and quotably. If your pages open with long intros and bury the answer, AI struggles to extract it.

Fix: Make the first paragraph of each page directly answer the question it targets.

5. Your brand identity is ambiguous to AI

If other brands/people share your name or your identity isn't clear, AI may confuse you with others or stay silent because it isn't sure. This is a frequent cause of a low "recognition" score.

Fix: Use distinguishing details — field, sector, location — consistently everywhere; clarify your entity record.

6. You're absent from category questions (Share of Voice)

AI may know you by name — but what matters is whether you appear when a user who doesn't know you asks "who would you recommend in this category?". There's a world of difference between being recognized and being recommended.

Fix: Measure your category visibility (SoV) and see which topics you're losing.

7. You don't measure it — so you don't manage it

AI visibility isn't static: models update, answers change, competitors move ahead. You can't improve what you don't measure, and most brands have no idea where they stand in this new race.

Fix: Measure your visibility regularly and track how it changes over time. GEONI's watchlist does this automatically every 15 days; each automatic scan costs the same tokens as a regular scan.

Where to start?

Rather than guessing which of these seven apply to you, measure. A single scan shows whether AI recognizes you, whether you appear in category questions, whether you're open to bots, and which competitors are recommended in your place.

Frequently asked questions

I rank #1 on Google but ChatGPT doesn't recommend me. Why?

Google rankings and AI answer visibility are different mechanisms. If your site is closed to AI crawlers, lacks structured data, or isn't cited in trusted sources, AI may not see you regardless of your ranking.

What do I need to do to appear in ChatGPT?

Allow AI crawlers (robots.txt + llms.txt), add structured data, write answer-first content and aim to be cited in trusted sources. Measuring first is the most efficient start.

How do I know whether AI recognizes me?

By asking AI engines the questions real users ask and checking whether you appear and who is recommended instead. GEONI does this free in in minutes with a 0–100 score.
