What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?
Last updated: July 2026 · GEONI Team
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the practice of making a brand, person or website appear inside the answers produced by AI engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. Where SEO competes for positions on a results list, AEO competes for a place inside a single answer.
Why it matters now
User behavior has fundamentally shifted: people no longer type "best accounting software" into a search box and scan ten links. They ask an AI assistant — and get one answer, usually naming two or three options.
That changes the math of visibility. Ranking fourth on a results page still brings traffic; not being mentioned in the AI answer means, for that user, you never existed. The competitor who is in the answer is one question away from the sale.
AEO vs GEO vs SEO
| Term | Goal | Success metric |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | High position in a results list | Ranking position, organic traffic |
| AEO | Being part of the AI engine's answer | Answer inclusion rate, recommendation order |
| GEO | The academic/technical name for the same goal | Citation in generative engines |
In practice AEO and GEO are used interchangeably. The distinction that matters: SEO optimizes being found; AEO optimizes being recommended.
How AI visibility is measured
Measurement means systematically asking AI engines the kinds of questions real users ask. A sound measurement covers at least these dimensions:
- Recognition: Does the engine correctly identify the brand or person, and how does it describe them?
- Category visibility: In "best X" style questions, is the brand recommended — and which competitors show up instead?
- Technical access: Can AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot…) reach the site; are
robots.txtandllms.txtcorrect? - Structural signals: Does the site expose machine-readable structured data (JSON-LD schema)?
- Source trust: Is the brand present in the independent sources AI engines trust (knowledge bases, reputable publications)?
GEONI combines these dimensions in a single scan and produces a 0–100 AI Visibility Score, reported together with competitor analysis and the topics you're losing.
How to improve AI visibility
- Open the door to bots: allow AI crawlers in robots.txt and add an llms.txt at your root. See the llms.txt guide →
- Add structured data: tell machines who you are explicitly with Organization/Person/Product/FAQ schema.
- Write answer-first content: make the first paragraph answer the question directly — AI engines prefer quotable clarity.
- Strengthen entity records: maintain a consistent, well-referenced brand record in global knowledge bases.
- Earn independent mentions: appearing in publications AI engines trust measurably raises your recommendation odds.
- Measure and monitor: visibility is not static; models and answers change constantly. Track your score over time.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO aims for high positions in a results list; AEO aims to be part of the single answer an AI engine produces. In SEO, being among ten results is enough — in AEO you are either in the answer or you don't exist.
Are AEO and GEO the same thing?
Largely yes — two names for the same goal. GEO comes from academic literature, AEO from industry practice.
Can AI visibility really be measured?
Yes. Ask the engines real user questions, check inclusion, description and recommended competitors, and produce a 0–100 score. GEONI does this free in 60 seconds.
If my SEO is strong, do I still need AEO?
Yes. Rankings and AI answers are driven by different mechanisms. Brands ranking #1 on Google while never being recommended by ChatGPT are common — you need to measure both.
